Retirement

Whether you are planning for your pending retirement or you are looking to enhance your current lifestyle in retirement, there are many factors to consider.  Clearly, financial concerns are top of mind when you ask most Canadians about retirement.  Although these concerns are valid, there are more than just financial matters to consider.

From our perspective, we try to advise our clients to discuss many of these matters with both their families and ourselves before they even get into retirement.  This process can uncover future needs and it can also help you start to think about things that maybe you really have not thought about before.  You may be surprised to learn that one of the more common themes we get from those clients we have helped through their retirement is:  “Retirement really isn’t what I expected.”

Although there is a lot to be said for spontaneity in life, here are a few topics for you and your spouse to consider as your approach retirement:

Do we plan to work part-time?
Are there health issues to consider?
Are there volunteer programs or charities in the Niagara region we would like to get involved with?
Do we plan on downsizing our current home?
How are we going to spend all of this newfound time?
Do we want to travel?  Can we afford to?
Will our current health insurance and/or benefit coverage change?
Can we spend more time with our children/grandchildren?

“Retirement really isn’t what I expected.”  Are you really prepared?
